Ask Florida's Delegation to Stand Together Against New Drilling

Two bills are moving through the U.S. Senate with provisions to open up drilling off Florida's beaches. Sen. Bill Nelson has vowed to fight the effort. If you don't want to see new rigs off our coast, sign this letter urging the rest of Florida's delegation to stand strong against new drilling.

After you sign the letter, please post a link to this page on your Facebook or MySpace page and urge your friends to sign on too. That's a great way to spread the word -- the more Floridians sign the letter, the louder the message to our elected officials will be. (And while you're there, become a Facebook Fan of CIVIC too!)

The Petition

Members of the Florida Congressional Delegation:

The undersigned Floridians urge you to stand strong against any efforts to expand drilling off Florida's coasts.

New drilling in the Gulf will do little or nothing to increase energy independence or solve our economic crisis. It will merely endanger our vital tourism industry and natural resources.

Even the Bush Administration's Department of Energy Annual Energy Outlook for 2007 concluded that if the restrictions were lifted on access to the eastern Gulf there would be no "significant impact on domestic crude oil and natural gas production or prices before 2030."

We only need to remember the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, when 124 spills resulted in more than 700,000 gallons of oil dumped in the Gulf, to know that new drilling near Florida's coasts endangers our beaches and marine life, both crucial to Florida's tourism economy.

We urge you to do everything you can to stop any federal legislation that would allow new drilling in the Eastern Gulf.
