Governor Expands Special Session to Include PIP
Oct 1, 2007
Late last week, House and Senate negotiators announced that compromise legislation had been developed to reenact Florida's personal injury protection (PIP) and no-fault auto insurance laws with reforms to discourage fraud. But on Friday when the House Speaker Marco Rubio and Senate President Ken Pruitt issued the call for the special session, they did not include the PIP legislation.
A few hours later, Speaker Rubio sent a letter to Governor Charlie Crist saying "We have not been able to reach an agreement to place this issue within the call of the Special Session scheduled to begin October 3, 2007....I urge you to consider using your constitutional authority to insure that the Legislature take up this issue during the upcoming special session." This morning, Governor Crist issued a proclamation expanding the call of the special session to include PIP, requiring the legislature to address the issue. He also announced that there would be an additional special session in October to revamp the constitutional amendment dealing with property taxes in the wake of the court decision removing it from the ballot.
