Progress on PIP: A deal is near

Sep 18, 2007

Legislative leaders and key legislators are now optimistic that a deal can be reached to preserve Florida's PIP and no-fault auto insurance system. House Speaker Marco Rubio, who has long maintained he will not support any PIP reform that fails to reduce fraud, said yesterday that he believes there is a "consensus growing behind something meaningful." He declined to comment on timing, but did not rule out a special session prior to October 1.

Senator Bill Posey, the Senate's chief PIP negotiator, also expressed optimism after learning over the weekend that Rubio is willing to work with the legislation Posey has offered. In addition, Governor Crist held another day-long summit with players from all sides of the issue.
