Special Session Rescheduled:
New PIP Legislation Gains Momentum

Sep 15, 2007

Legislative leaders announced that the special session has now been rescheduled and will begin on October 3. "We are pleased to inform you that significant progress has been made to establish a general framework for reducing state spending," said a memo issued to legislators Thursday afternoon by Senate President Ken Pruitt, R-Port St. Lucie, and House Speaker Marco Rubio, R-West Miami.

Legislative leaders are still saying they will address only budget cuts in this session. However, a bi-partisan group of House members has begun counting votes in support of a one-year extension of PIP. Governor Crist held a day-long meeting on Wednesday seeking to build consensus for new PIP legislation. And news reports indicate that negotiations have begun on reform legislation.
